Using a Bark Training Dog Collar
A bark training dog collar, an item also known simply as
a bark collar, is designed to be a training tool for
your dog. The bark collar teaches the dog not to bark at
inappropriate times and is especially useful with dogs
that bark excessively or at inopportune and
inappropriate times.
Few things are more annoying to neighbors than a dog in
someones yard that barks all night long. Perhaps the
worst part about it is the infectious effect the barking
has on other dogs in the area. All it takes is one
boisterous dog to get every dog on the block barking
loudly. You dont want to be the owner of that first dog
at the next meeting of the homeowners association.
A bark training dog collar is similar to any other
collar, but has an electronic device affixed to the
front. The electronic device is usually protected by a
plastic casing with two small metallic points that rest
against the dogs throat.
With some furrier or hairier dogs the area where the
points meet the throat may need to be shaved in order to
allow contact with the skin. The device uses a small
watch or hearing aid style battery for power. The
plastic casing is designed to be sturdy, and should be
able to withstand the antics of even the most active
dogs and will usually last a good long time.
The bark training dog collar controls and corrects the
dogs barking by issuing a small electric shock as a
corrective measure whenever the dog barks. This is
accomplished by the small metal points on the device.
When the dog barks, the natural movement of its mouth
and throat cause the points to be dragged across the
skin, activating the unit. The shock is obviously a
source of discomfort for the dog and he quickly realizes
that the correction follows by the barking.
Some pet lovers and animal rights activists believe that
the use of a bark training dog collar is cruel
treatment. The correction causes more discomfort than
pain, however, and is never strong enough to seriously
harm the animal.
Manufacturers of bark training dog collars are also
quick to point out that the collars are not intended to
be used as a substitute for good obedience training,
merely as a tool or a part of an overall
correction/reward system. They also state very clearly
in the users guide that the collar should be worn for
short periods of time only and not left on the dog all
the time.
The pet lovers and activists who are against the use of
these collars will also concede that the method is much
less cruel than a veterinary de-barking operation that
suppresses the dogs ability to bark at all.
Simple and convenient, an bark training dog collar is a
good way to keep your dog from barking when you dont
want him to or, more accurately, a good way to train
your dog when it is and isnt appropriate to bark. The
bark training dog collar is most effective when coupled
with a proper training program and not seen as a final
solution to an overly barking dog in and of itself.
The corrections issued will make the dog uncomfortable,
but are not overtly painful or harmful in any way. If
youre a dog owner experiencing the turmoil and
frustration that an excessively or inappropriately
barking dog can cause, a bark training dog collar could
be an answer.
