Phydeaux Meets the Barking Dog Shock Collar
On Susies fifth birthday she was thrilled to find
amongst her gifts a brightly wrapped package with small
holes in the sides and on top. She knew from Maria
Salazars birthday last June that a present with holes
in it could only mean one thing. Her parents had bought
her a puppy!
She excitedly tore through the paper and opened the box
to find an adorable beagle puppy. She held the puppy and
examined him, tickled him, and smiled as she rubbed his
belly. She knew she would love this little brown and
white puppy forever and shed always wanted a beagle
because thats the kind of dog that Snoopy was.
She named her puppy Phydeaux after the dog in her
favorite cartoon, one of those off the wall Warner
Brothers shorts that didnt feature Bugs Bunny and the
gang, but some panda bear kids and their dog, Phydeaux.
When she turned to her other gifts she heard her father
say, You know, were going to have to get a barking dog
shock collar too.
After the party, when everyone had gone home, Susie went
to her mother and asked her what a barking dog shock
collar was and why theyd need to get one. Her mother
didnt want to explain it right then, but Susie learned
soon enough why theyd need one.
Beagles, it turns out, bark. All dogs bark, of course,
but beagles display a propensity for barking that is
unrivaled by nearly every other breed. As the weeks went
by and Phydeaux grew, the barking became louder and
lasted longer. Finally, Susies father came home one day
with a bag from the pet store in his hand. Inside the
bag was the mysterious barking dog shock collar.
Susies father called her to him and had her watch as he
put the barking dog shock collar around Phydeauxs furry
neck. He explained to her that the collar contained a
special little device that would give the dog just the
tiniest shock whenever he barked and that they would be
able to use this to train Phydeaux not to bark so much.
Susie was concerned that the collar would hurt her
beloved pet, but her father explained that it doesnt
hurt more than the tiniest pinch and that, if he learned
quickly, Phydeaux wouldnt have to wear the collar for
very long. He also explained that while the collar was
on, it wouldnt take Phydeaux too long to realize that
he only got shocked when he barked and that would make
him stop. Susie was happy to learn that her father was
right.
Susie and her father trained Phydeaux together and in no
time at all the pup learned when he should and shouldnt
bark. The barking dog shock collar soon became
unnecessary and the house was back to being as quiet as
it had been since before Phydeaux arrived. Susie had her
puppy, her parents had their peace and quiet and, for
one little girl and her dog, all was right with the
world.
