When I went to my neighbors house, I was quite
surprised to see a little gadget placed on his dogs
collar a citronella dog collar, as I found out later.
Curiosity got the better of me and I asked him what the
box was for. Did you hear my dog barking at midnight
last night? I shook my head I had heard nothing.
Thats why we have that. That was when I noticed that
the dog had not barked even when I rang the doorbell.
That device, the citronella dog collar, was quite
amazing. It turns out that my neighbors dog used to
have a problem barking at anything that moved. Hed bark
in the middle of the night like someone was breaking
into the house. My neighbor would have to walk
downstairs in his bathrobe and see what the problem was.
Usually he couldnt see anything.
A friend of his recommended a dog shock collar after
having a similar problem. Every time the dog would bark
it would deliver a light shock to his neck. My neighbor
didnt like the idea of shocking his best friend, so he
looked for other options.
Thats when he came across the citronella dog collar. It
seemed simple enough. Like the shock collar, it just
hung around his dogs neck with only one small box
protruding from it. Also, like the shock collar, the
citronella dog collar only worked when the dog would
bark over a certain volume level. He liked that, since
he also wanted his dog to continue letting him know when
he needed to go outside.
The difference laid in the method of discipline. In the
citronella dog collar, the little box would spray a mist
directly in front of the dog. How does that help? I
asked him. My neighbor removed the collar from his dog
and made a sharp noise close to it. The spray he told me
about jetted out of the box. It startled me. Thats
exactly how, he responded.
My natural reaction to jump at the noise of the spray
was the same thing that caused the dog to quit barking.
It startled him. It was the exact same response as if we
would have yelled at him for barking, but the best part
is that it didnt come from us, so we werent seen as
the disciplinarians.
Noticing the strong citrus scent in the air, I asked my
neighbor if he had been eating an orange. He held the
citronella dog collar up to my nose and I caught the
strong scent of citronella. It smells like our barbecue
last week, I commented. He told me that the mist was
all-natural citronella the same material used in the
buckets in our backyard. It was a perfectly safe
material. Its also quite strong smelling. Thats
another thing that interrupts the dogs barking. His
sensitive nose gets confused by the citrus and he loses
focus on whatever he was targeting.
Needless to say, I was quite impressed with the
citronella dog collar. It was safe, humane, and
effective. I would have bought one for my pet
immediately, but I dont think they make them for fish.
