Choke Chains The Worlds Best Dog Training Collars
Animal experts agree that the proper equipment and the
proper demeanor are two of the most important tools a
dog trainer needs in his arsenal. The proper demeanor is
with the trainer from birth or is learned along the way.
The proper tools are widely available, but their correct
usage must be learned and practiced. Anyone can use a
hammer with little or no instruction, but it is the
seasoned professional who is able to drive a nail into a
board in two hits every time. The dog trainer must
similarly learn to use the tools of his trade,
especially the choke chain or lead slip collar,
widely considered to be the best dog training collar
that there is.
Al though the choke chain may be the best dog training
collar available, it is not without its share of
controversy. There are many people who dont like the
choke chain because it does indeed live up to the first
part of its name. It corrects the dog when the trainer
gives a sharp yank on the leash, causing the chain to
tighten around the animals neck. The collars are
generally safe, however, and do not cause the animal any
real pain or pose any real threat to the dogs health.
The correction causes the dog discomfort, but it is a
learning experience that allows the dog to associate bad
choices with the unpleasant experience. Good choices
should be similarly rewarded so the dog learns the
difference in what nets him discomfort and what gets him
a reward.
The best dog training collars are available in a wide
variety of styles. Most choke chains are simply a length
of stainless steel chain with a metal O-ring at either
end. The chain is bunched together and passed through
one of the rings to form a loop that goes around the
dogs neck. The remaining ring is where the leash is
attached.
The chain functions in the same way that a slip knot is
tightened. When the leash is pulled (or if the dog
fights against the will of the trainer), the chain
tightens. Other styles of choke chain are not really
chains at all, but are made of nylon. These slip collars
function in the same way as the choke chain.
It is important to note that, while the choke chain is
the best dog training collar and has been proven
relatively safe and effective, it can cause harm to the
animal if it is misused. Before attempting to train your
dog with the traditional jerk and praise method using
a choke chain, be sure that you are instructed in its
proper use.
Improper use of the choke chain can cause neck, back,
and tracheal trauma to the dog. A study conducted in
Germany showed that these injuries are rare but can
occur when the chain is jerked too roughly. Any training
tool can cause some sort of trauma to the dog if it is
not used correctly, however, and this is not a problem
that is unique to choke chains.
