The Dog ID Collar For Pet Identification

There are many reasons why a pet can go missing, but what is important is having a way to find the missing pet. This is where the dog ID collar comes in. The dog ID collar is a pet identification method that helps owners locate a missing pet if it goes missing or runs away from home.

Permanent Pet Identification

There are two main types of pet identification methods, permanent and nonpermanent. The permanent methods of pet identification include tattoos and microchips.

Tattoos

Tattooing a dog involves shave hair of the inside or their legs or at the tip of their ears and place a coded number. This number will be linked to a pet registry database that will have the dog's information in case someone finds him and wants to return him to the owner.

Tattoos have an advantage over the dog ID collar as an identification method in that they cannot be removed like the ID collar. However, the dog ID collar is more visible than a tattoo, especially in dogs with lots of fur. If someone finds a lost dog, they would be have to bring it into the Veterinarian's office to search for the tattoo.

Microchips

Microchips are special devices that are used for permanent pet identification like tattoos. The microchip involves a tiny transponder that is placed between the layers of skin on the dog's shoulder The information on the microchip is linked to a registry database as well.

Surgery is not required to do this and if you pet goes missing and is found, a scanner can read the data located on the microchip and your dog will be returned to you. Microchips have the same advantages over a dog ID collar like a tattoo does, but the microchip is much better than the tattoo. The chip cannot be removed so the dog would always be able to be identified.

However, since the chip is located embedded in the skin, if someone found the pet, they might just keep it thinking there was no way to trace the owner, because they would not be able to see the microchip. The dog ID collar does not have this disadvantage.

Tattoos and Microchips are more expensive methods of identification than the nonpermanent methods.

Nonpermanent Pet Identification

Collars and Tags

Collars and dog tags are located in the nonpermanent pet identification category. A dog collar and ID tag is a cheaper method of pet identification. However, like the tattoo and the microchip, it is also linked to a registry database, and has the advantage that it is more visible. However the disadvantage of the dog ID collar is that is can be removed and then it will be harder to identify the dog if it becomes lost.

But regardless of what type of identification method you choose, either the tattoo, microchip or dog ID collar, the most important thing is that your dog is identified in some way.
