How to Make Your Own Dog Collar

Making your own dog collar is fast and easy. The materials required include: leather or nylon, a sharp utility knife, belt buckle, rotary puncher, industrial sewing machine, and measuring tape. In start to make your own dog collar, you will need to determine what size you would like your dog collar to be. You should measure the width of the intended dogs neck using the measuring tape so that the collar is not too loose or too tight.

After you have measured the neck of your dog, add about two to five inches to the length of this measurement, depending on if your dog is a small or large breed of dog.

The next step would be to cut the material you have selected to this length. If you are making a leather collar, the leather must be pretreated and stained before the length and width is cut. If you are making a collar using nylon, the width of the nylon can be bought predetermined, and you would only need to cut the material to the desired length.

After you have cut your material, it is time to make a hole for the buckle end. Bend the right end of the dog collar to form a crease. In this crease, use the rotary puncher to form a hole. Place the buckle prong into this hole and attach the buckle. Make sure the two pieces of the bent end of the collar are aligned. Using an industrial sewing machine, sew the bent sides of the right end of the dog collar together, while holding tightly to the material.

Another alternative to using a buckle with the nylon dog collar, is to attach a break away clip to your dog collar. Break Away clips can be sewn onto each end of the nylon dog collar and attached to the dog's neck. Break Away collars prevent injury and so are more humane than any of the other type of regular dog collars.

Lastly, determine where the four or five holes will go on the left end of the belt. Use the measuring tape again to evenly distribute the holes placing them in a straight line with equal distance between them, using the rotary puncher. Before fastening the new dog collar around the dog, examine it thoroughly for jagged edges.

By using this method, you can design and make your own dog collar for your favorite pet or to give away as a gift!
