Leash Training Your Dog

Training your dog is important and must be done with a dog collar and leash. Every new pet owner should become responsible and train their new dog to be comfortable with using a dog collar and leash, and obeying commands.

There are many ways to train a new dog. First start off by using simple commands such as stay, sit, or come so the dog can become accustomed to obeying you. It is a good idea to start this training early on before trying to train your dog to use a dog collar and leash.

With training your dog to stay in one place, stand in front of the dog and hold up your hand and say the word "stay" loudly and then walk slowly backwards while keeping eye contact on the dog. Practice the stay command until the dog does it right. Then reward it with kind words and a treat for every time the dog does this right.

Another command to have your dog learn before it is ready for leash training with a dog collar and leash is the "sit" command. This is not a hard command for most dogs to learn. You can train the dog by using a treat. While looking the dog in the eye, show them the treat in your hand and move your hand upwards until the dog is looking up, and firmly say, "sit". If your hand is held high enough above the dog's head, it will naturally sit to maintain eye contact with the treat.

Another way to teach your dog this command is to say, "sit" and gently push on the dog's rear end to nudge it to sit. Regardless of what method you use to get the dog to sit, don't forget to reward it after it follows the command correctly.

A third command your dog should know before being trained with a leash is the "come" command. The "come" command is very important especially when the dog is attached to a collar and leash. Using a long leash, you can train your dog while it has collared and using this command by telling the dog to stay and rewarding it when it carries out this command. Then walk further away from the dog and say the command "come" and calling the dog's name is helps. Reward the dog when it carries out this command correctly.

After your new dog has learned these simple commands, it is time to train it with a leash. Using the dog collar and leash to can help you do this. Start by showing the dog the dog treat in your hand. Then with the dog either sitting or standing next to you start to walk by stepping on your left foot first.

The dog should walk beside you and not in front or behind you. If it continually pulls on the leash and is not able to walk, repeat the training until you are satisfied with the dog's behavior. Every time it is able to walk beside you correctly with a dog collar and leash, reward it with loving words and a treat.
