An Introduction To The Different Types of Dog Collars
There are many types of dog collars that you can buy
depending on the type of dog you have and what your
needs might be. The type of dog collars can be divided
into the regular collars and the training collars.
The Regular Dog Collars
The first and most common type of dog collar is made of
leather. It is fastened using a regular buckle just like
the belt buckle a human being would wear. They are the
most popular for dogs without any behavioral problems.
The regular type of dog collars can also be made of
other material as well such as nylon or hemp as opposed
to leather and feature Velcro or fasteners instead of a
buckle.
The Training Dog Collars
Within this category of dog collars are the Pinch and
Prong Collars, the Electronic Dog Collars, Choke
Collars, Citronella Collars, and the Halters.
Pinch and Prong Collars
The pinch and prong type of dog collars rely on prongs
located close to the dogs skin. It is used to train a
dog's behavior. If the dog starts to pull on their lead,
the owner can yank the chain and correct the dog's
behavior. The pinch and prong collars should only ever
be used as a training tool and is not recommended for
small dogs especially puppies.
Electronic Collars
The electronic collars are placed around a dog's neck
and will deliver a small electric current if the dog
fails to obey a command given by the owner. The owner
will determine when and how much of a shock is given
sometimes using a remote control.
Choke Collars
This type of dog collar is used as training device as
well. They consist of a metal collar with a slip chain.
The animal is usually yanked when it fails to carry out
a command given by the owner. This is the least humane
collar to use as the repetitive yanking can injure the
animal and cause damage to its neck and vertebrae.
Citronella Collars
Citronella collars work by releasing a puff of
citronella when the dog is barking out of control. The
surprised puff of Citronella quiets the dog down because
this substance smells awful to them.
Halters
Halters are a unique type of dog collar in that it wraps
around both the neck and the mouth of the dog. It is
used to as a training device for dogs that pull on their
lead. It trains the dog to walk properly at a normal
pace beside you.
It is easy to see that there are many types of dog
collars available and the type you choose would depend
on the purpose it is being used for.
