Knowing When You Should Use A Dog Bark Collar
Anyone who has a dog knows that barking is a natural
thing for a dog to do. Dogs communicate through barking
to warn us of intruders, to display dominance and
ownership, to show fear, loneliness, and to warn of an
attack. Unfortunately, many dog owners are forced to
consider a dog bark collar because the barking is just
too much. Even when you respect and understand that
barking is natural for dogs, for us to live harmoniously
with them we need to teach them when it is acceptable to
bark and when it is not and a dog bark collar is one of
the most effective ways to do this.
Many dogs can learn not to bark just by being commanded
not to, or by being removed from the area that they
enjoy each time they bark. Other dogs just cannot
contain their need to bark, and this is usually when a
bark collar is warranted. Bark collars are effective on
almost all dogs, although great care should be taken
with smaller breeds, dogs that tend to show aggressive
behaviors, and those who bark out of separation anxiety.
If your dog falls into one of those three categories,
you should consult with your veterinarian before
proceeding to use any type of dog bark collar.
There are couple different types of bark collars for you
to choose from. If you are looking for a more natural
approach a citronella bark collar is a great option.
Instead of a shock or other method of bark control, a
citronella bark collar just emits a small puff of
citronella. These collars work because the dog does not
like the smell of citronella and quickly associates the
barking behavior with the unpleasant smell. The
citronella bark collar is a good starting place as its
usually very effective and minimally invasive.
Another type of dog bark collar you can buy is an
electroshock or static shock bark collar. These collars
emit a shock when the dog barks, teaching the dog that
the consequence of barking is an unpleasant shock. Most
of these collars allow the owner to adjust the level of
shock the dog receives. The smaller the dog, the smaller
the shock and vice versa. It is usually very effective
and over time most dogs will limit their barking on
their own, without receiving a shock. Thankfully, dogs
quickly learn to associate negative consequence with
barking and tailor their behavior accordingly.
A dog bark collar isnt something we ever want to
consider for our pets, but if you want to stay friendly
with your neighbors it may be necessary. Barking is
usually an easy fix and it shouldnt cause tension
between you and your neighbors, or more importantly,
between you and your pet. Remember that barking is
natural, and unless you set the expectations for your
dog, he wont know better. Be patient and kind, and
before you know it your dog will be barking less with
the help of a bark collar!
